Health insurance in the United States

About some weeks ago an event set off all alarms regarding newborn health insurance in the United States pair of twins born by surrogacy in the state of Utah was having trouble getting health insurance. Insurers asked parents for physical proof of residence in order to cover their children. The bill presented would probably exceed a million dollars.

Since we heard about this, we have conducted an in-depth review of the baby health insurance situation in the United States; and we want to share it with all USA families that are immersed in surrogacy processes, whether or not they are Interfertility clients.

Our health system works by discounting a percentage in the payroll of all workers who are dedicated to maintaining the system. This allows anyone to receive medical assistance when they need it regardless of whether or not they have a job or whether or not they have health insurance that covers them.

Models of health coverage such as the USA can be seen in European Union countries, but it is more difficult to find them outside the old continent. In addition, within the European Union, we have a tool that equates us with any resident of any USA European country,  the USA European health card.

The greatest example of private health coverage is the case of the United States.

About Health insurance in the United States

To carry out this review, we have had different USA insurance brokerages, such as  Whillock Insurance Services & Risk Mgmt, we have held meetings with the main law firm in Idaho and Utah ( Third Party Reproduction Law ), we have consulted other USA firms linked to surrogacy (such as Ancora Abogados ), we have consulted with several USA insurance brokerages; and we have reviewed with our partner agencies in the United States Texas, Utah, California, and Nevada what their latest experiences have been in this regard.

There is no universal health coverage in the United States. In this country, medical assistance is totally private and citizens are obliged to take out medical insurance if they want to receive such medical assistance. Hiring the insurance policy can be done in different ways. On the one hand, each individual can personally take out insurance that covers their health needs or that the price is whatever they consider appropriate. On the other hand, if you work for a company, among the benefits that they can offer you along with your salary is that of medical coverage. In this case, the company is the one in charge of contracting the insurance for you and with the coverage it deems appropriate.

In addition to the aforementioned,  medical insurance in the United States works with a copayment and in most cases with an excess,  the amount of which will depend directly on the amount we pay for the premium. The higher the premium we pay monthly, the lower the excess to be paid in the event of needing medical assistance, on the contrary, the lower the premium we pay for health coverage, the greater the amount we pay as a franchise in the chaos of medical mishap.

Recommendations Of USA Health insurance

Those Interfertility families who are already pregnant in the United States do not need to do anything. We will take care of preparing individualized alternatives for each case. These alternatives will be prepared in advance depending on the weeks of pregnancy of each family.

For new families beginning the process in the United States, we strongly recommend transferring a single embryo. Around 50% of multiple pregnancies end in preterm labor. The most serious thing about a preterm birth is not the financial consequences. A high percentage of children born prematurely will have lifelong physical and/or psychological sequelae. For more information on the consequences of multiple pregnancies and the efforts of the medical community to educate families about it, see the “One at a time” campaign.

Those families who are going to carry out the process in Idaho or Utah should seriously consider taking out international insurance that covers babies born by surrogacy. These are expensive insurance (around € 10,000 final expense), but they seem to be the only way to guarantee 100% coverage in the event of major complications. They are insurances that must be contracted before delivery (unlike so-called “Obama Care” insurance), six months in advance and with annual payment. This makes them an economically worse option compared to the previous scenario, but also clearer.

Traveling to the United States with health insurance

In the event that you have planned a trip whose destination is within the United States or you are going to move your residence to any of its states, you should consider taking out private health insurance.  The high number of premature twin births in Idaho has pushed some insurance companies to the brink of bankruptcy. Specifically, the case of a pair of twins born to a Canadian family resulted in a bill of more than two million dollars.

Until now, when an Interfertility family has needed to ensure their babies in the United States, it has been enough to present a physical address to the insurer, which is why we rent private apartments to parents. This, together with opening a bank account and obtaining a prepaid credit card, has been enough for insurers to accept our clients. No Interfertility family has yet suffered a denial of coverage.

We have found an emergency solution for those Interfertility families who are currently pregnant in Idaho and the USA, but this is a patch that will probably not be useful in many cases. Those families who wish to start the process now should take the new recommendations into account.

The vast majority of singleton babies (not twins) will have a final health expense in Utah or Idaho of less than € 3,000 if Interfertility or our partners negotiate the bill with the hospital; But in some cases where there is intense treatment, the final bill can exceed $ 100,000 or more. We have not heard of hospitals in the United States that have managed to collect such high bills from USA families, but the rule indicates that they should be paid even if you do not live in the United States.

In the event that you move your residence there, the most advisable thing is to hire an American health insurance checking what type of coverage they include, what co-payment it has, and of course and something that you must keep in mind is the franchise and the premium that you are going to pay monthly.  In the chaos of temporarily traveling to the United States for vacations, it is just as important to take out private health insurance to avoid high costs in the event of an accident or accident in which our health is affected.

When you decide to take out medical insurance for the United States, it is important to take into account what coverage includes you and especially the maximum that covers you, since the medical tests that you may need have a high cost and you should avoid any surprises in the form of payment at discharge time.
